The Biggest Gathering of Dairy-Free Thanksgiving Recipes

Fresh Cranberry Sauce from Two Peas and Their PodAlisa Fleming ~ Thanksgiving can be a tricky time of year for dairy-free living: potatoes mashed with milk, creamy beans, buttermilk biscuits, and of course, butter added to just about everything on the table. Fortunately, there are many, many wonderful dairy-free recipes available for Thanksgiving ... and I've gathered a huge selection of them for you right here. These recipes are from here on Go Dairy Free and from around the blogosphere (thanks to all of the talented contributors!).

Each year, this enormous list continues to grow as more recipes are posted. In keeping with demands, you will find a ton of recipes below that are not only dairy-free, but also vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, egg-free, and even nut-free. Poke around and see which ones fit your dietary needs and cravings.

The BIG list below (now at roughly 200 recipes and growing for milk-free mavens) includes a plethora of sides and main dishes, appropriate to serve to all guests, special diet or not. However, the list of pie recipes has grown so extensively that it now requires a Dairy-Free Pie Recipe Round-Up of its own.

If you prefer to modify some family favorites of your own, see Go Dairy Free: The Guide and Cookbook. Within you will find all of the staples you need, including easy recipes for a spot-on condensed creme of mushroom soup (low fat to boot!), sweetened condensed coconut milk (amazing taste and texture), 5-minute "buttermilk," homemade chocolate chunks, and two simple and nutritious sour creams. Go Dairy Free also contains some of the recipes that appear on my Thanksgiving table, including the Tender Squash Dinner Rolls, Traditional Green Bean Casserole, and the Cheese-Free Scalloped Potatoes. For last minute emergencies, Go Dairy Free is also available as an e-book in PDF format and for your Kindle, iPad, or e-Reader.

Pie Crust Tips (for gluten-free and dairy-free too)

Oh yes, and do not forget the topping!  You can get a wonderful array of dairy-free, vegan, and gluten-free frozen desserts at most major grocers these days. I highly recommend any Turtle Mountain brand (So Delicious, Purely Decadent, etc.; they have options that are both soy-based and coconut-based), but you might also enjoy some of the other vegan and soy-free ice cream options on the market, including Organic Rice Divine, Rice Dream, or Coconut Bliss. Again, these are available at most natural food stores and in the natural food section (a little freezer) of your local mega-grocer. For a more exhaustive list of creamy topping options, get a No Dairy Product List.

Dairy-free whipped topping is a difficult one to find in stores, but it does exist! Plus, it is surprisingly easy to make your own vegan whipped "cream" (or should I say crème?) at home. For full details on both store-bought and homemade options, see my detailed post on How to Find or Make Dairy-Free and Vegan Whipped Cream.

Aunt Bonnies Egg-Free and Dairy-Free Pecan Pie

Wholly Wholesome Vegan PecanPie - Egg-Free, Dairy-FreeA special holiday recipe from the kitchens at Wholly Wholesome ~ There’s no question that pie is a staple in American homes during the holidays. Pie has that inevitable quality to bring together a family after a hard-earned holiday meal to enjoy some good old family tradition. The conversations that surround a fresh-baked pie include; “how’s school going,” along with “I can’t believe how big you’ve gotten.” A homemade conversation for a down home family that brings family closer every holiday is the cornerstone for every bite of pie.

Few Americans realize the history that goes into the pies they enjoy today. Originally called a “coffin” (meaning “basket” or “box”), the pie was the beginning of every holiday meal. For hundreds of years, tracing back to our great ancestors, every meal was baked into a crusty shell and served warm with meat filling the interior. Then, pies were considered a necessity.  Today, however, pies are considered a culinary delight. Our beloved pie is so special that it is now saved for family gatherings and a sweet treat after meals.

“Pies have been a central part of our family celebrations for generations,” said Doon Wintz, President, Wholly Wholesome. “My sister, Bonnie, and I have a friendly competition at holiday meals. She makes her famous pecan pies and I make pumpkin or ice cream pies. The winner is the one whose pies are gone. Having a large and supportive family (we usually seat 40+), it always comes out a tie—no pie left. It’s a real treat to pass along our family’s tradition through wholesome, natural and organic baked-goods. We understand the importance of family and how food brings them together in a really special way.”

Pies have a serendipitous appeal for every taste bud, from Apple Pie to Pumpkin Pie – from Blueberry to Cherry, and serendipitous tastes call for serendipitous recipes, including the one here for Bonnie’s Pecan Pie. Everyone has the ability to enjoy this recipe from Wholly Wholesome including pie lovers and special dieters. Whether you’re Vegan, Kosher or just interested in Organic and Natural foods, you can find a pie that suits you at www.whollywholesome.com or www.facebook.com/whollywholesome. What's Available in the Eggnog Aisle for Dairy-Free and Vegan Diets

Dairy-Free and Vegan EggnogsAlisa Fleming ~ Did you know that there are almost more brands of Dairy-Free and Vegan Eggnog on the market than dairy-filled ones? How cool is that? In stores like Whole Foods, non-dairy nog actually dominates the shelves, but have no fear, you can find many of these delights at “regular” grocery stores, too. The shelf-stable ones (which I will note) can even be purchased online.

Unfortunately for eggnog traditionalists and lactose intolerant dairy-free consumers who are not vegan, the market currently lacks eggnogs that are simply dairy-free (I haven't found any as of yet, anyway). In other words, all of the dairy-free “egg” nogs are also egg-free and vegan. This doesn’t make them any less delicious, but it does put them an extra degree of separation away from the traditional.

The creamy dairy-free holiday beverages don’t stop [not-so-traditional] eggnog either. I’ve included some other seasonal sips below that you might enjoy, too. That all said, here are some nog-a-licious dairy-free AND vegan options ...

Silk Nog by Silk Soymilk (refrigerated) – The brand that started the vegan nog tradition.

Silk Soy Eggnog - Vegan, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free Gluten-Free

Holly Nog by Vitasoy (shelf-stable) – They don’t heavily promote it on their website like the others, but trust me, it’s out there in stores!

Vitasoy Holly Nog - Vegan, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Gluten-Free

Earth Balance Organic Soy Nog (refrigerated) – Earth Balance upped the nog ante in 2011 with an organic soy-based version.

Earth Balance Organic Soy Nog - Vegan, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Gluten-Free

Nog Coconut Milk by So Delicious (refrigerated) – Yes, dairy-free, soy-free coconut-based nog does exist!

So Delicious Coconut Nog - Vegan, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Gluten-Free, Soy-Free

Rice Nog by Rice Dream (shelf-stable) – Another tasty soy-free (and nut-free) option. They don't list it on their website (at last check), but it is sold in many stores and online.

Rice Dream Rice Nog - Vegan, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Gluten-Free, Soy-Free

To note, I have trialed two of the above brands, both very different from one another. You can see my review here: Comparison of Rice Nog and Silk Nog.

Rudi's Organic Bakes an Incredible Array of Wholesome Bread Products in their Dairy-Free Facility

Rudi's Organic English Muffins - Dairy-Free and VeganAlisa Fleming ~ Like many people, the concept of dairy-free used to be quite simplified in my head; it meant no milk, butter, ice cream, or cheese. But dairy-free living extends far beyond these basic foods. Milk ingredients are used in so many everyday processed foods, from granola bars to packaged meats to bread. Yes, even bread.

Some people wonder why I include bread recipes in Go Dairy Free. Next time you go to the grocery store, check the ingredient statements on the various brands of bread. When I went strictly dairy-free, there wasn’t a loaf in town that didn’t contain milk in some form. I had to learn to bake, and I knew that others would, too.

Dairy-containing bread still abounds, but fortunately a few companies have sprung up in recent years with bread that I can safely sink my teeth into when convenience is in order. One of my newest loves, Rudi’s Bakery, goes above and beyond; baking all of their bread products in a dedicated dairy-free facility (they are also peanut-free!) ...

On our recent move to the northwest, we found ourselves in a transition week without food, energy, or a fully functioning kitchen. That’s when I discovered Rudi’s Organic 100% Whole Wheat Bread on sale. It was fluffier than my homemade loaves (I love hearty bread!), but still quite good. Each morning we enjoyed some toast with nut butter, and happily made our way through two entire loaves. So I was eager to trial a few other Rudi’s products when their team contacted me.

I chose to taste-test two types of the English Muffins, since so many brands contain milk and I have trouble finding whole grain versions. My first choice was the Spelt English Muffins … I simply love spelt … but their new Harvest Seeded English Muffins sounded intriguing too.

We really enjoyed the spelt muffins, but as it turned out, the Harvest Seeded English Muffins were our favorite. Both varieties had an equivalent whole grain flavor with a texture that was just fluffy enough to qualify as an English muffin, but the little seeds in the Harvest Seeded won us over …

Rudi's Organic English Muffins - Dairy-Free and Vegan

I also had the opportunity to trial Rudi’s Spelt Tortillas. They were of course heartier and a tad less flexible than regular flour tortillas, but I still managed to wrap up some Thai Peanut Wraps for lunch without making a mess.

Rudi's Organic Tortillas - Dairy-Free and Vegan

And they sliced beautifully too …

Rudi's Organic Tortillas - Dairy-Free and Vegan

I still love making my own spelt tortillas, but these were pretty excellent, and of course perfectly round, which my homemade versions never seem to be. In a pinch, I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase these.

Rudi’s bakery churns out a large variety of breads, buns, rolls, bagels, tortillas/wraps, and English muffins. Rudi’s traditional bakery products are all organic, but they also offer an entire gluten-free line. You can usually find their products in natural food stores, but many traditional grocers also carry this rapidly growing brand.

Be sure to check the Rudi’s Bakery website (www.rudisbakery.com) for information on all of their products and to see if they have any printable coupons!

Dairy-Free Recipe: SunButter & Strawberry Jelly Smoothie

SunButter or Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jelly SmoothieAlisa Fleming ~ After a winter that lasted far too long, Mother Nature has finally decided to skip right over spring and head straight to summer in the West, and I couldn’t be happier. My alternate name for summer is “smoothie season,” and you can bet there will be at least one of these shake-like beverages whizzing away in my blender every day for the next three months.

This particular smoothie is thanks to the abundance of organic strawberries that I found on sale in May and June. I stocked up, sliced, and froze several pounds of these delicious berries. Since strawberries can vary quite a bit in sweetness, and often taste a bit tart in shakes, I opted to sweeten this beverage with a fresh date and some stevia to taste. To go with the seedy theme, I also used a new milk alternative, Sunsational Vanilla “Milk,” which is fairly low in sugar, but still added a nice little hint of sweet.

I think what surprised me most, was how the berries and seed (or peanut!) butter played off one another for an actual peanut butter and jelly flavor sans bread. It wasn't long ago (this year in fact) that I tried sunflower seed butter for the first time, and it does taste remarkably like peanut butter!

In my kitchen, this recipe made a delicious and filling breakfast treat, but feel free to sweeten it more for a dessert-like afternoon pick-up …

SunButter & Strawberry “Jelly” Smoothie

This recipe is Vegan, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, Peanut-Free (unless you use peanut butter of course!), Soy-Free, and optionally Refined Sugar-Free.

Place all ingredients in your blender, and process until smooth. If the smoothie is too thick for your tastes, add a little more milk alternative.

* I used a few dashes of pure stevia extract, but you could use drops of liquid vanilla stevia, honey, agave, or even strawberry jam! How much sweetener you will need depends on the sweetness of your strawberries. With all but the stevia, I would start with 1 teaspoon and go up from there.

Why do so many people with Celiac disease, gluten sensitivity and should be a dairy-Free

Gluten free and Dairy freeAlisa Fleming, for the reasons I asked recently ~ other dietary issues such as wheat and gluten from this site and my book, Facebook fan to go to the Dairy-free. At the outset, I would have to be sure, his very poignant question should be posted on this website "… what does look at the book, celiac, who says" go to the dairy herd of free "and think" oh yeah ", which is needed?" But then a good friend shared the post that discussed the cross reactivity with questions and I realized that this misunderstanding is likely to be relatively general.

My family is to clarify, milk products, but we are not gluten-free at this time. Go free. milk and dairy products, and to this Web site, not only gluten-free are either, but to inform the other in their gluten-free options, or when the food or recipe, just happens to be gluten-free ' efforts to make (many foods are, so don't let you off the gluten free title scare you!). The athletes also take myself free now for several years, I have many friends who are gluten-free, and they help to keep me educated on the topic. My friend gluten free approximately half are also dairy-free, that corresponds well to the statistics, that I am addressing this post ...

But first let's touch the the reason most people initially cut the gluten free from dairy products. Gluten questions, such as Celiac disease causes damage to the gut, the inability of many leaving the patient to digest properly in certain foods, such as lactose (milk sugar). Diagnosed with Celiac disease, most patients are encouraged to eat dairy products free or lactose-free, at least. When a patient has to comply strictly with Celiac gluten-free diet (time varies) for several months, often in their gut, "improved" and the digestion fluid to improve. Some of the ability to properly digest the lactose in back, but for some, lactose intolerance continues.

However, the of the lactose is not necessarily only in the dairy herd behavior for Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. A large percentage of these individuals will not improve and the strict gluten free diet alone because they have a "cross-reactivity" of other proteins in the diet. In these cases, the immune system attacks the other proteins in certain foods, even as they were gluten, causing the symptoms persist. Threats to the health of the Primo, "studies indicate that approximately for 50% of patients in a sensitive, gluten, the protein is also found, namely, (a cow) in bovine milk and milk products, casein, the problem of the." So for some, the lactose is the only concern and may be temporarily, but the milk protein substances and warrant issues, many of the diet not only gluten-free, but also dairy products freely.

Cyrex Labs, a new laboratory, which is dedicated to the gluten sensitivity, sia disorders and Immunology, the general topic has been the key in the game in the field of cross reactivity problems. They actually recognizes the Group's cross reactive foodstuffs do not contain gluten, but it can be exacerbated by patients sensitive to gluten immune. While the other might be able to add to this list, these are the proteins in food/, and which they must cross reactivity so far: cow's milk, quinoa, Alpha and beta-casein (milk protein), yeast, Casomorphin (protein "components"), tapioca, milk Butyrophilin (another milk protein), buckwheat, oat, American cheese, chocolate, coffee, grain sorghum, millet, maize, Sesame, hemp, rice, amaranth, and potato. Please note, Cyrex cross Labs for also includes a list of the reactivity of some wheat-based and wheat free foods that contain gluten, and should probably be avoided in patients sensitive to gluten, regardless. They are contained, rye, barley, wheat and spelt wheat in Poland.

This is not to say that all the people who are sensitive to gluten, necessary to avoid the food to the entire list. For those who are gone, Celiac disease or gluten free gluten sensitivity, and have been unable to find the symptom relief, cross reactivity, the concept can be much desired answers.

Anyone concerned about the cross reactivity, currently two viable alternatives are for testing purposes. One is to ask the surgeon to subscribe to the boundaries of the reactivity of Panel you Cyrex Labs.
